Medigap Insurance Eligibility Rules – Disabled – Under Age 65
If you are between age 18 and 64 your Medicare disability eligibility is tied to Social Security Disability rules. Exceptions are made for those with ESRD (End Stage Renal Disease).
If you don’t have enough work credits through the Social Security system you are not eligible for SSDI.
To qualify for SSDI and Medicare, you must be physically or mentally disabled and have a disabling condition that is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death. When you are approved for SSDI, your benefits will begin if you have been totally and permanently disabled for at least 5 months. Once you have been on SSDI for an additional 24 months you are eligible for Medicare and Medigap insurance.
There are two exceptions to this rule.
If you have ALS (Lou Gherig’s disease) or ESRD your Medicare benefits and Medigap insurance can begin the first month you receive your SSDI benefits.
