Fruit fly traps can be made at home. Georgia summers are known for heat, humidity and fruit flies. Leave a banana, tomato or citrus fruit out on the kitchen counter and it doesn’t take long for fruit flies to swarm.
Fruit fly traps are not difficult, or expensive to make. Forget sprays or pest strips. You can rid your kitchen and bath of these pests with simple fruit fly traps.
Here is what you need.
- Bottle of cheap wine. Red or white. Fruit flies like both. You can substitute apple cider vinegar if you wish.
- Small soft drink bottle. The small ones (10 oz) work fine but you can use the larger ones work as well.
- Sharp knife
Empty, wash and rinse the soft drink bottle. Turn the bottle on its’ side and cut the upper portion of the bottle off, as if you were making a funnel. Your fruit fly traps will use the inverted bottle top as a sort of funnel to draw in the fruit flies to their death.
Pour wine (or apple cider vinegar + 1 tablespoon sugar) in the bottom of the bottle and fill it up about half way. You want to leave a 2-3 inch gap between the wine and the inverted bottle top.
The sweeter the wine the better. Fruit flies are attracted to sweet, sugary scents. I use cheap wine from Trader Joe’s. The three buck Chuck works just fine and I don’t feel bad about sharing it with fruit flies. I am just trying to kill them, not date them.
You will need at least 2 traps, possibly more. Set your fruit fly traps near the kitchen and bathroom sinks. If you have not seen fruit flies in the bath you must have stopped them before the started to breed.
Fruit flies are hard wired for two things.
Eating and having sex.
When they are not reproducing, they are eating.
The wine is the food, and possibly enhances the mood for love.
The fruit fly traps placed near a sink drain provide them a place to dine and possibly have sex as well. How accommodating.
